Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

When should my child have his or her first dental visit?

According to MAPD (Malaysia Association of Paediatric Dental) recommendation, the first dental visit should be by the age of 1.

What should I do if my child has a toothache?

It is advisable to visit a dentist as soon as possible whenever a child is experiencing a toothache.

However, in situations where the dentist is unavailable, you can try to identify the cause of the pain. Common reasons for toothache include:

  1. Tooth decay/cavity: A cavity is a hole in the tooth caused by the breakdown of the tooth enamel. This is the most common cause of tooth pain in children. Depending on the size of the hole, a child might experience different levels of discomfort or pain. If parents notice a hole in their child's teeth, it is best to get it fixed as soon as possible.
  2. Tooth teething: You can check on the tooth eruption chart and see if the pain is due to tooth eruption. If it is, frequent rinsing with warm salt water or applying some toothing gel might help.
  3. Tooth sensitivity: Some children may have sensitive teeth, which can cause pain when exposed to hot or cold temperatures, sweet or acidic foods, or brushing too hard. In this situation, avoiding the stimulus of pain might reduce the pain.

Are thumb-sucking or using a pacifier harmful to my child’s teeth?

Both habits give a sense of security, and it's okay for young age toddlers. We usually will want to discourage the habit by the age of 2 and aim to eliminate it by the age of 3.

Prolonged sucking habits might impact a child’s dental and facial development, such as:

  1. Anterior open bite
  2. Jetting out of upper front teeth
  3. Incompetent lips
  4. Narrow palate

What should I do if my child's permanent tooth is knocked out?

Follow the best practices as mentioned below:

  1. Stay calm and try to find the tooth.
  2. If found, hold it by the crown (the part which we brush normally, not the part inside the gum).
  3. Clean it gently under running water. Do not scrub the teeth.
  4. Try to put it back into the socket.
  5. If not possible, place it inside the mouth after being sure there is no risk of being swallowed.
  6. Alternatively, put it in a container filled with saliva or milk. Do not store it in water or wrap it in a tissue or cloth.
  7. Go to the dentist immediately.

How frequently should my child see the dentist?

It’s recommended to see a dentist every 6 months for children and adults. A regular dental check and routine scaling help to maintain good oral health.

Can my young toddler use fluoride toothpaste?

Fluoride is an important mineral that is essential for the maintenance of healthy teeth and bones.

We understand that parents are concerned that their baby might swallow the toothpaste, but all we need to do is control its size:

  • Use a rice-size of toothpaste for ages below 3
  • And a pea size amount for above 2 years old

Supported by the America Association of Paediatric Dentist and National health service (UK)

What can parents do to help prevent tooth decay?

Here are some tips for you:

  1. Use fluoride toothpaste
  2. Encourage good oral hygiene and brushing habits
  3. Limit sugary and acidic foods and drinks
  4. Make sure no more food or milk intake after brushing before bed
  5. Visit the dentist regularly
  6. Consider dental sealants
